She Selflessly Gifts

Asking for nothing in return

April is for celebrating the greatest of the great,

Giving thanks and gratitude for the gifts we receive,

Honouring Mother Earth in all her glory,

Welcoming her beautiful selflessness in which we believe.

**

She shines on a bright day with the bluest of skies,

She blows a cool breath on the back of our neck when it’s hot,

She whistles through the leaves in perfect harmony,

And she cries the heavy tears when we feel we cannot.

**

The gifts of her bounty are fulfilling and plenty,

Given freely for all her creatures to share,

Her trees are a welcome gift of shade and coolness,

When our skin overheats from her day so fair.

**

Her waterfalls are a delight to our sight,

A gift of cool wetness to slacken our thirst,

A pool to bathe away the dry dust of the north,

And she refills them with a quick showery burst.

**

Her rugged mountains house the most astonishing views,

While keeping us fit as we wander and trek,

Her valleys of lushness and greenery feed those of the land,

And make us slow down the pace as they form a bottleneck.

**

Her soil holds the essential minerals that help us thrive,

And grows the nourishment all her creatures need,

From staples of grain to the sweetest of fruits,

She gifts us with everything we need to feed.

**

She does, at times, lose her fiery temper,

And howls in pain at all we’ve done wrong,

She flashes her fury across the blackest of skies,

And thunders her anger, putting us back in the place she feels we belong.

**

But like any mother, she quickly forgives,

And cradles us in her bosom with love once more,

She’s the mightiest of might, to be honoured and respected,

Deserving of the worship as her creatures bow and adore.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

And one day, she wouldn't forgive us no more. That would be the end of us, lol. Loved your poem my friend!
