She Can No Longer Be Broken

She’s already unfixable

She flirts with death on her doorstep on a daily basis,

It’s just a part of her every day routine,

Every morning she dresses in her scars and pain,

And adorns her crown as the Underworld’s Queen.

👹

She has hit rock bottom so many times she’s lost count,

And so made the decision to wallow in the bowels of Hell,

She ultimately discovered it was where she truly belonged,

Stalking the halls as she lets her demons rebel.

👹

So you believed you could trample her asunder,

Break her cold heart in an attempt at assassination,

But she laughed in your face and smiled, whereby you turned and ran,

When you realised she’s already living in her halls of damnation.

👹

She’s had the best of the best long before you,

Her heart given to one that managed to wed and bed her,

He got to call her wife — a mantle she still wears with pride,

Once her partner, her charmer, her lover and her soul connoisseur.

👹

As she has already been broken by the lord of heartbreak,

Anything you throw her way is nothing more than an annoyance,

Her cracks and bruises are engraved deep within her soul,

And her demons have carved their names in her skin in avoidance.

👹

Her heart is locked and chained to any who have lost their courage,

Who cannot stand by her side in a show of solidarity,

Promises are cheap, as is the fake charm and blustery words,

Especially from one who falsely spouts ‘forever’ with regularity.

👹

The lesson was soon learned that he could not break her,

His strength not on par to the steel clamped around her heart,

As destructive as he tried to be, it was but an ant bite’s nuisance,

Not knowing who she was when he attempted to tear her apart.

👹

She walks away from such trivialities in her every day life,

As many mistake her for one of the mild and meek,

She usually has the last laugh when the realisation sets in,

Her brokenness is her strength, it does not make her weak!

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Yes my brokenness is my strength now. Just like her, things just annoy me but I don't think anything can break me further. Fantastic poem!

  • Still waters run deep. Is anyone sure they want to know what lies beneath that placid surface?
