Shattering the Mask

Repainting my features

finely crafted for me

over years of

negative reinforcement training

perfect alabaster mask

attached while I

slept and laughed

thought I would not notice

I never really sleep, though do I

worn patiently

became everything

expected of me

I gave, and they took

till nothing was left

but the mask

so I grabbed

round the edges

ripped

agony pulling through skin

but the sun feels so good

shining on my face

no one ever knew

or cared who was

underneath

as long as the mask

stayed tightly in place

it's been removed

smashed to smithereens

I never was that mask

you'll all be dealing

with me now
