Negative Space Challenge

Top Story - October 2026
Lonesome walks without you.

Four fleeting moon spins

Since I cradled you close

That last embrace

Neither of us knew

Was final

Never to be repeated.

Over…

*

Contrary Time

flies and f l a g s

No reason

Nor rhyme

Eons ago

Yet yesterday.

Memories fiercely fresh

But strangely stale… faded.

*

Homecomings

Go unheralded

Cruising into the garage

Bereft

Not one single glimpse

No dark furry flurry

At the corner of my eye

Nothing.

*

Shoelaces tied

Setting out on

our afternoon stroll

Solo…

Patting playful Poppy, the puppy

No chaotic cavorting

Along the fence line.

Absent.

*

Well-worn leash

Lies limp

Bone dry water bowl

Waiting…

Dried leaves dance and twirl

Mingle with fur shed months ago

Pooled forgotten beneath a decrepit chair.

Our last dance, lost past. Done.

*
A bark

Or two

Not you.

Tasty leftovers

Morsels mount up

Then… go to waste.

On your watch...

Unthinkable.

*

Four flagging moon spins

No irrepressible

Shadow closely dogging

My every step

Tracking my every move

Gone.

Replaying every memorable moment

You’re locked in my heart…

Forever.

Written for the Negative Space challenge below. Inspired by our gorgeous black Labrador, Hudson…our very Good Boy.

“Twitch of an ear…” is the tale of Hudson's departure, swiftly followed by his feline sister, Mia’s. They left a gaping hole in our lives.
