Shades Of Black

Naomi Ruzic

By Naomi ruzicPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

As she walks by people stop to stare

But they look with disgust, they are unaware

She is judged and she’s mocked

People laugh and they talk

They think less of this girl

Who’s black and she’s white

They judge her by looks, they stare with no sight

But the shades of black is all a façade, caution tape, danger, beware of dog

It keeps people out, it keeps them away

She’s been burned in the past, but won’t be today

For the makeup, tattoos, tall spiky shoes

The oversized tees and the jeans with cut knees

Will keep her hidden, Will keep her safe

For no one would dare, to step in that place

But what if they did? what would they see?

If they’d turn the cover and begin to read?

They’d meet a girl, who is flowing with colour

Who is vibrant and bright, who is like no one other

They’d see a girl who is strong, who is brave

Who’s been through an eternity of torment and pain

But through all the struggles and through all the bad

she’s stood against the judgments people had

Her hair once yellow, now dyed black

Her clothes once pink, now only black

Her eyes one blue, now lined with black

Her lips once red, now painted black

See all of these things, can be changed back

But if you’d just look past the shades of black

Past her piercings and past her tats

You’d see the colour that comes from within

The colour no painter could create or mix in

The outer colours can they can all be changed

But the symphony of colour on the inside is what remains the same.
