Self Destruction

The pain projected on the two

Golden possibilities washed under the bridge,

Lost moments never to be regained,

Drastic decisions thrown to the wind,

Desperation in the tone when explained.

***

The future opening to the abandonment,

Trust dissolved into the never ending darkness,

Sorrow worshipped in a knowing heart,

Disappointment expected within its starkness.

***

Seeping into the rejection of one’s love,

Friendship dribbling into the distance,

Hope buried in a heart of constant deception,

Until she gives into the constant resistance.

***

No words can recoup the connection,

Smashed to smithereens on the whim of one,

Fear riding the back of a once promising romance,

Just so he could say he won.

***

Was it worth the cost?

Was the loss of a promise coveted by pain?

Distance rising in between the once happy connection,

Only to live with the regret once again.

***

Tomorrow is never guaranteed,

Immaturity beckoned into one of age,

Self sabotage and an unsavoury ego,

Tormented and pitifully full of rage.

***

Unfortunately he is his own worst enemy,

Nastiness flies from his lips unbidden,

Name calling his crutch when he can’t get his way,

And she guards her soul, to which he’s now forbidden.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Knowing no other way to get what he wants, he loses it all.

  • Self sabotage and an unsaved ego. That's like soooo true! Your last stanza was so powerful! Loved your poem my friend!

Colleen your poem beautifully captures the emotions of lost love and the consequences of hasty decisions. The imagery is vivid, and the reader can feel the depth of the emotions being conveyed.
