Within a world unlike my own

Led by the rule of three

Familiar roads of cobblestone

Lay in the dark for me.

A boy is waiting silently

The one who’s always there

He winks and motions ‘right this way’

Though warning to beware.

It never ceases to amaze

The way he grows in pace

With each third year he ages too

His height, his build, his face.

I follow swiftly through the brush

The path is strange but known

We’ve done this time and time again

And never walk alone.

The bright macaw arches his neck

Ill placed within the pitch

“A little lost but not far now,”

He screeches, “Find the witch!”

We venture forth to seek the truth

The one we’ve never found

No corner, hole, nor stone unturned

Bar those beneath the ground.

The creaking of the witch’s hut

We peek behind the door

And see it laying silently

The trap within the floor.

Perhaps this time we’ll make it through

And find it deep inside

Forever close, forever far

We’re once again denied.

The darkness steals the world from view

Once more lost is my friend

In three years time we’ll try again

For now this is the end.
