Question Your Arbitrary Life

Why does your day start

in the middle of the night?

And why do you say “not enough

time.”

when what you mean is daylight?

Does it even matter,

that distinction?

No one can give you

more of the other.

You’ve assigned these measurements

only to resent them,

so you don’t resent your

nihilism instead.

How would we know when work starts?

Would you even show up

if we measured wealth differently

than pained lunch breaks with co-workers?

How would we know the show starts

when the actress starts to speak?

Too arbitrary for you?

How would we know when to sleep?

Oh, darling,

when was the last time you rested your head

without tomorrow sharing your bed?
