Scary Halloween Night

It’s only here once a year a frightening night for all

Scary Halloween Night

The moon hangs thin and cold,

Beneath the trees the shadows creep,

What walks where daylight cannot reach,

When all the world has fallen asleep.

The wind sighs low through brittle boughs,

It calls your name in hollow tone,

Do you not feel it drawing near,

The thing that never can be known.

Dead leaves skirl fast on cobblestones,

They dance in circles dark and wild,

Who leads the revels in the dark,

With eyes that burn and never smiled.

The gate creaks open all alone,

No hand has touched its rusted wood,

What waits beyond the ivy wall,

In places where the sun ne'er stood.

A lantern glimmers far away,

Its flame is pale and faint and blue,

Is it a light to guide you home,

Or lure you to the shadows too.

Footsteps fall on mossy ground,

They come behind and never cease,

They stand still when you turn round,

Or follow till your breathing cease.

Bones lie bleached where nettles grow,

They rattle when the night wind blows,

What tale do they not dare to tell,

Of those who went where darkness goes.

The owl hoots low from hollow trunk,

It sees what you can scarce discern,

Can you not hear the distant call,

That makes your cold blood twist and turn.

The air grows thick and cold and still,

The stars have vanished one by one,

Is there no path to lead you back,

Now that the night has just begun.

The shadows stretch and take a shape,

They stand before you still and tall,

What will you do when it draws near,

There is no answer none at all.
