Safe

For Nana

A shiny clean kitchen floor.

So slick I can skate in my socks, pretending I’m graceful.

An abandoned goat shed with a rickety wooden ladder.

Perfect home base for vast adventures and day dreams.

Trees with thick trunks and sturdy branches.

Perched high but shaded in green, a safe space to be.

Early summer mornings with grass full of dew.

Perfect for catching the bitty frogs. But careful of the nervous fluids they spew.

Shelves stuffed to the brim with books.

Providing hours of entertainment and escape.

An endless supply of paper and pencils for drawings.

A patience for a less than skilled artist.

A giant red brick fireplace.

The perfect stage and safe zone from the floor is lava.

A retaining wall made of stones.

Climbing to the top just to peak at the handsome men in yellow pants, driving big red trucks.

Up on a hill with a big front window.

A view of sunrises, sunsets, and fruit orchards in all seasons.

In the kitchen bright yellow cheerful walls.

The smell of lasagna, lingering in the air.

A long walk from the bus stop with the sting of the day weighing heavy.

Greeted by cookies, brownies, rice crispies or some frosting filled sweet treat, the weight lifted.

Not a perfect home, but one filled with the sounds of music and laughter and the love of a grandmother.

A wonderful tribute to your loving Nana. “ A long walk from the bus stop with the sting of the day weighing heavy. Greeted by cookies, brownies, rice crispies or some frosting filled sweet treat, the weight lifted.” Lovely.
