Russian Dolls

a poem

Peeling away the protective layers,

Nested like matryoshka dolls,

One within another,

With each unveiling, more and more to delve into,

Yet time remains elusive.

One moment in time,

Repeated a thousand times,

Yet going nowhere, moving backwards.

Where is the meaning, where is the honour,

Were they taught to discuss nothing?

To take someone's worst aspects and discard their best,

To determine who should be in control,

To corner someone and leave their life devoid of meaning.

I have glimpsed a small portion of the world

I have listened to even more

I have trodden carefully on fragile eggshells and scorching hot coals

I have positioned myself above it all.

They desired power, while the only power I possess

Lies within the realm of my neurons

To reconstruct and start afresh

With each radiant day that dawns upon me.

To unlearn and relearn,

Piecing together all the unmatched parts,

I'm shedding this foolish, doomed mood,

Fed to me for far too long.

Trapped, suffocating in an airtight can,

Experiments were never my strong suit,

But someone used me

As their test, subject for the things

They were unsure about how to do.

For twenty years, they perpetuated falsehoods,

And eventually, they grew tired of me.

They discarded me on the sidewalk, where they never tread,

Preferring to cruise in their sleek automobiles

Cloaked in their inflated egos

Steering society towards its own demise.

We can arrange another meeting

When you feel defeated and scarred,

You can come to my office

Following the rules

Established by the laws of psychology

Instead of being driven by fleeting moods.
