Road Trip

for the soul

By Harper Lewis Published about a month ago 1 min read

I’m taking you to the beach,

down South Carolina backroads

tree-canopied byways,

portals to another place

and time, that honeydripper

spending golden moments

at lacy, scallop-edged intervals,

breathing the pluff mud

under Spanish moss-draped live oak arms dangling bracelets of green light in our path

tidal creeks and rivers whispering under bridges suspended low,

craving the kiss of salt water

before the full embrace of the ocean erases the ersatz years from the lines around our eyes,

becoming fresh and new, shining like pennies

in the sunshine of the pinnacle of youth,

below sea level.
