Finally Burning Right

This piece came out of a warm desert morning where everything moved slow the kind of quiet that lets the blues speak for themselves.

Riverside Desert Morning Blues

You live long enough… you stop explaining your scars to people who never earned the story.

You stop defending your name to folks who twisted it for sport.

You stop shrinking your flame just to keep somebody else comfortable.

I’ve been loud in rooms that didn’t deserve me, quiet in storms that weren’t mine, smiling through pain that should’ve broken me.

And age… age is a beautiful rebellion.

It teaches you the art of calm.

It teaches you the power of boundaries.

It teaches you that peace is a choice  and I finally chose mine.

Even my coffee changed.

I learned the water you brew with can carry a story… and I choose the kind that doesn’t fight me anymore.

So let this morning rise slow.

Let the desert breathe.

Let the blues walk in like an old friend.

Because this ole rock‑n‑roller grandma?

She’s got a story to sing.

The Riverside sun rolls in soft,

Dust floating like it’s tired too.

Coffee still thinking about brewing,

And I move slowly, the kind of slow you earn after decades of getting back up.

I’ve smiled through lies that weren’t mine,

Held my tongue when they twisted my name.

I’ve watched folks rewrite my story without living a mile of my truth.

Age taught me this: you don’t fight every fire, you outlast it.

I don’t care who don’t like me,

Not in this sun, not in this light.

I’m just a slow‑burn flame in Riverside,

Finally burning right.

I’ve danced in bars that ain’t standing anymore,

Loved hard, lost hard, and kept my boots through every storm.

I ain’t loud, I ain’t bitter. I’m seasoned.

And that’s a different kind of strong.

I dropped the heaviness at the old front door,

Left it like a coat I never needed.

I don’t shake, I don’t worry, I don’t chase anyone’s approval.

Calm ain’t weakness, it’s wisdom.

I don’t care who don’t like me,

Say it soft, say it true.

I don’t care who don’t like me,

I’m finally choosing me.

Harmonica whispering like a prayer in the sand,

Sun warming my shoulders like a blessing.

Sweetie sings her tiny morning note,

And I breathe deep, not healed by time, but healed by truth.

You live enough years… you learn the rhythm of letting go.

Time moves quiet, truth gets simple, and every breath becomes borrowed grace.

I’ve walked roads that bent my bones, loved people strong as thunder, lost a few who slipped away without a sound.

I’ve had my name tainted, my story twisted, my heart tested.

But I’m still here steady, seasoned, a lantern in the midnight wind.

This ole grandma sings the blues of time and space, of bridges burned and bridges built, of storms survived and mornings earned.

I don’t care who don’t like me, that train left the yard years ago.

I’m just shining once before I fade, speaking my truth, walking away unafraid, and enjoying the ride while the world keeps turning either way.
