River Drift

On the Catawba

By Harper Lewis Published 2 months ago 1 min read
Harper Lewis in the Catawba River

Hot as blazes,

muggy as inland Florida.

Down 74, there’s relief

in Belmont—

the clean river,

muddy from rain, sandbar

so massive the

current

lags,

dwindles, blood

warm water creeping,

cool beneath the surface.

I dip my legs deeper,

lean back, close my

eyes,

drifting

into different waters.
