Reluctant Love

Or, Unchosen Place

Your laughter veils the shadow in its glow

A storm concealed, yet pulsing in the deep

I chase the warmth, that colder winds forgo

And wake to the fires where frost has learned to sleep

Our steps converge, but our eyes can not see

The ending we know yet refuse to name

Desire insists on what can never be

And reason yields when passion speaks its claim

Fate weeps knowing that our cursed love must end

But what is love to us but something lost

For our love is pain, joy, and fleeting grace

A light that burns in an unchosen place

Sonnet
