Pink!

plus sign on the pregnancy test

and later, after the ultrasound,

pink!

balloons, and onesies, and pretty

coral

blankets to swaddle me in.

Pink!

mouth stuffed full with cotton

candy and bubble gum.

Easter dress

yellow,

kiss a fellow, why so

blue,

little girl? Smile more.

White!

wedding dress, Barbie dreams come

true in an exchange of

gold

rings. Never-beginning and never-ending,

I am handed from one man in

black

to another. Exchanged and sealed away

safe! from this dangerous world.

Black

moods. Why the dull,

black

moods, dear? Why do you sit

in shadows and think inky thoughts

never laid to rest? Smile! with your

white

teeth for the camera.

Grays

blur as decades pass. She’s become

translucent. The

pink baby, the woman in the

white dress, the

translucent,

shadowed wife.

RED!!!

RAGE, tear it all apart.

Start over, grab for the

rainbow.

Don’t let go. Never let go.

Every color is yours this time.
