Record Player
A free verse poem about my tendency to fixate on things
My brain
is like a record player
of old songs
I listen to ceaselessly.
I have a massive compilation
of both upbeat and melancholy tunes
I listen to on a daily basis
from sunset to sundown.
Some songs make my heart sing,
some songs incinerate my soul.
Some songs put me to sleep,
some songs make me restless as a racing pony.
The words I’ve read and written
are the lyrics
of each tune I play constantly.
The sounds I’ve heard
are the instruments
that are being used
in the background.
My brain
is like a record player
of stories, fables and folktales
I read aloud to myself.
They can either put
a huge, scrumptious, sweet smile
on my face
or transform me
into a miserable, grumpy woman
who hides under the covers all day.

Speaking With Paint
Introduction From someone who has lived with Autism for most of my life, I believe it’s crucial to understand that many people on the spectrum are capable of just as much as individuals who don't live with Autism. I don’t live with non-verbal Autism myself, but I’ve known people who’ve lived with non-verbal Autism and I was able to observe their strengths, weaknesses and the challenges that arise. As I’ve noticed each and every one of them closely, I tell myself that they are just like everyone and that living with the condition doesn’t make them less then. That’s why I decided to write this fictional poem. I want to elaborate on the fact that people with non-verbal Autism are an asset and not a threat to society.
