Suddenly, a car horn blared in the distance, and Lucky bolted again.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Elliot muttered, launching himself after the dog.
This time, Lucky led him toward the industrial side of town. The buildings here were tall and looming, their windows dark and empty. Elliot wasn’t sure what kept him going. Maybe it was the thought of the reward, or maybe he just didn’t want to admit defeat.
Lucky slipped through a gap in a chain-link fence surrounding an old warehouse. Elliot hesitated. The fence looked sharp, and the ground on the other side was littered with broken glass. But he’d come too far to back out now.
