Every time he thought he was close enough to grab Lucky, the dog would dart away again. The alley was narrow and cluttered with overturned trash bins and soggy cardboard boxes. Lucky weaved effortlessly through the mess, his little legs carrying him faster than Elliot would’ve expected.
Elliot tripped over a piece of debris and hit the ground hard, scraping his palms on the rough pavement. He cursed under his breath but quickly scrambled to his feet. The sound of Lucky’s paws on concrete was fading fast.
The chase led Elliot through backyards, over fences, and across busy streets. He ducked under a clothesline, narrowly avoided stepping on a rake, and startled a group of pigeons into flight.
