Elliot paused, his breath visible in the cool air. Five hundred bucks. That was more money than he’d ever held in his life. It was enough for a new phone, or maybe those limited-edition sneakers he’d been eyeing for months.

He scanned the flyer again. Third Street wasn’t far from his route home. His stomach fluttered at the thought—was it even possible? He wasn’t sure why he didn’t take a photo of the flyer or text the number listed at the bottom. Some part of him didn’t want to share this with anyone.

Instead, he turned left, heading toward Third Street.

The neighborhood grew quieter as Elliot ventured off his usual path.
