Raising a Queen

Poem by Sam

By Samantha Hawkins Published 5 years ago • 1 min read

As a woman raising a little girl; you can’t tell me that bringing her into this world isn’t like sentencing her to hell.

You can’t tell me that if she’s smart and pretty she’ll succeed.

A pretty face says to the world “you’re dumb indeed”

And a girl with a brain? Well that ain’t so easy to see.

They’ll test her and trial her at every chance they get and if it back fires and she lashes out; they’ll call my baby girl a “wicked bitch”

Bringing a beautiful black girl in this huge cold world is like dropping a worm in a pool full of fish.

And though I can’t save her and protect her from everything... I can teach her and raise her in the ways of a queen.

Because a queen isn’t scared to stand up and be seen.

A queen won’t back down when someone challenges her dreams

A queen won’t run when the other side stands tall...

Queens are trained for battle; they’ll rather fight and risk it all.
