Rainbow Light
By Mackenzie Rose Nickel
When something happens
Something like a pandemic
Our colors become
Electromagnetic
We show up as Mothers
Fathers, and Daughters
Loving each other
Through salty waters
Navigating life
Bearing thunderous all
Moving together
As rain starts to fall
I ask the permission
Of light staggering
Up and down halls of our memory
Reminiscent of life before it got scary
To be here with me now
As we both breathe
Illuminate frames
Expose the fragility
Your sweet roses bloom
When the garden is fed
Even when thorns
Draw something red
Orange sun setting
Soon we forget
The pain that we feel
As we start to sweat
And if we can’t hug
I ask you to squeeze
The yellow from your lemon
juicy
The grass isn’t always
More cared for or green
In places that
We’ve dreamt of or seen
True pride comes after
The blue stormy sky
Has given her all
In an ugly cry
The clouds part ways
And we come together
Our true colors show
Soon after weather
Enough works been done
By Ancestors and kin
Who manifested royal
Light from within
We share the same breath
But not the same color
And yet we strive
To love one another
And when we breathe deep
Our colors collide
Refracting our beautiful
Rainbow light
