Quiet Prisoner

Violent Victory

By Kelli Sheckler-AmsdenPublished 9 months ago Updated 9 months ago 1 min read

Jenny was a quiet girl

She never made a sound

She grew up in a violent world

With no help to be found

Her daddy kept her locked up tight

When no one was around

Would visit her, late, late at night

And beat her to the ground

One night he made his way upstairs

Silently, stood at her door

Listened as she said her prayers

Watched for the lights across the floor

When it was dark, he stepped inside

But, she was bent on keeping score

She sprayed some fluid in his eyes

And grabbed the gun tucked in her drawer

No one heard a sound that night

She made him silent, too

She took the chance to take her flight

And finally left her room

Lyrical, like a nursery rhyme with dread import, as many such nursery rhymes have done before. Just one question. How did she get the gun & him not notice?
