Quiet Car

loud heart

By Lindsay TatumPublished about a year ago • 1 min read

Knowing we will never be isn’t the same as moving on.

I didn’t mean to string others along for so long.

I loved them in a way.

But my lips still tasted your name when we kissed.

A song comes on the radio and I ask them to skip.

Silence fills their eyes and I watch as they realize.

But we don’t say a thing as we sit in a quiet car

that slowly becomes too crowded as you swell in my heart

that just keeps looking for you in someone else.

I tried so hard not to be honest with myself.

They put their hearts in my hands and I accidentally scar them

trying to mold them into yours.

I didn’t mean to hurt anyone the way you

had hurt me before.

But the radio would sing of our memories

and I couldn’t help but want more.

I couldn’t help but hear you sing that you still love me

as I open the car door.
