Put Your Head in My Lap

I Will Never Let You Go

Lie your head in my lap

Nestle it close to my belly

My arms will keep you safe

‘Til your last moment

* * *

Stay close to me, my baby,

Just like when you were a puppy

And I will protect you from all your woes

I will shield you from every blow

* * *

Snuggle close to me, my darling,

Let me hold you closer still

And I will never let you go…

I will never let you go…

* * *

Please don’t take him yet, Daddy,

Let us sit here a while longer

Let me keep him safe

From his illness and the world

* * *

I can’t bear to release you

To your certain doom

Even as crimson drips from your lips

Down my arm and in my lap

* * *

I’m so sorry that I let you go

Everyone says it’s for the best

But how can you justify it

When the eyes you love go blank

* * *

I can’t stand this loneliness

My lap is empty without you

As I clutch your collar close

My heart will not release you

* * *

But someday you will send me

A miracle from over the rainbow

A little piece of you

Wrapped in a tiny package

* * *

Though years it will take

Your gift will help me heal

And through him I hold you again

And I will never let you go
