Purple Pill

A Queer Critique of Scene Life

I took both pills now I’m stuck in the Matrix,

Aware of this reality yet struggling to shake it.

Can’t fake it - feels too real,

Trying to find truth in amongst the spiel.

But that’s life as we’ve been conditioned

yet what do we choose?

Can a sovereign body be abused?

Or a spirit?!

Or a soul?!

...

must the rabbit have a hole?

I turned right at Albuquerque, now I’m in the zone.

But not in Canal Street cos I ain’t a clone.

Defined by aesthetic, I find it all pathetic,

emotional incels cos they just don't get it.

Riff on it, rip on it,

Everything’s a joke.

Silver wants a bonny lad,

but truth be told he’s broke.

Marriage has become paper

but union is the tree,

we’ve tied knots around our minds

and yet we see ourselves as free.

But the truest form of freedom,

is not in status nor in wealth,

for the antidote to sickness

is to be thy own true self.

This poem is a nod to my experience of being a non-scene Demisexual Bisexual whose formative experiences led to disillusionment with the commonly experienced negative behaviours within the scene. The issues with sexual, alcohol, and substance abuse within the scene are concerning. So too is the infamous bio tag of "no fats, no femmes, no..." way I'm finishing that sentence, but those that know, know... While we've come a long way in terms of mainstream acceptance we must also strive to improve our community, and that includes looking at the ugly bits. Sometimes humour can lighten the mood in doing so. But whatever method one uses is valid so long as folk are committed to creating a space for the next generation of LGBTQI folks that isn't quite as toxic as previous generations.
