RAINBOW PRISM
I saw only my sallow skin
and my dirty blonde hair
and my grey-green eyes
often clouded with despair.
A non-descript mousy being
I had perceived myself to be
‘til an eventful winter’s day
gifted me the chance to see
the colours of my being.
I was skating on a river
when I fell through thin ice
gulping air…swallowing water
I was certain I’d lose my life.
I was pulled to the surface-
my soul hovering in witness
to my ashen body lying limp
to rescuers under great duress
when a shaft of brilliant sunlight
pierced the muted mulberry sky
and as it rested on my still body
I knew I would not die.
I saw beauty in my being
through the eyes of my soul
and at that moment in time
I understood I am a rainbow.
I’m a red petaled rose
an orange-sunlight upon repose
a yellow butterfly on a breeze
a green growth of laurel leaves
a blue summer’s sky
an indigo raven flying high
a violet crown of chakra wisdom.
I am a beautiful rainbow prism.
