Princes in Private

A Sonnet

Pity seems benign, but it is poison

Smiling condescension strangles the soul

Better invisible than looked down on

Better a diamond mistaken for coal

Be mindful of the paradise within

However hellish the visible life

Do not read as the wages of some sin

Betrayal by the body, which yields strife

Those who cannot move slack, traitorous limbs

Can stalk with leopard grace through jungle dreams;

Voices unable to join in loud hymns

Secretly sing of being beyond seems

Treated as objects, subjects soon shrivel

Spare the prince within the pauper’s drivel

Sonnet
