Pride of the People
Reflections of an Imperfect Ally
When the parade is over I am alone, but only in the flesh
They come with me in spirit, still adorned in rainbow glitter and mesh
No longer are we together dancing in the street
Still I can feel us all united with a single heart beat
I carry your strength in moments where I feel weak
In uncomfortable conversations with coworkers where I once felt meek
I recount your humanity and history to those who still find your existence a mystery
I try to correct harmful language despite the speaker’s perceived anguish
I am not the perfect ally, but I stand with pride
I stand with the bravery of countless mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, husbands, and wives
