Priceless

A poem about a blanket

It's cold outside

Let me wrap you up and keep you warm.

I offer safety

in a world full of instability.

I stay the same

I offer unchanging support

When everything crashes down

I'm here

When no one is there for you

I'm here

You can hide your tears inside me

When I smother you

You can feel free

I am like a first love

familiar and comforting

You can run to me

Every night I can hold you tight

or you can simply sleep next to me

Every morning you claim I beg you to stay

but I am simply trying to give you what you need to get through your day.

Sometimes you'll take me to unfamiliar beds

and that's how I know you love me.

When your heart gets broken,

I'll hold you together.

When words stab deep,

I'll smother their memory.

When bruises cover your skin,

I'll hide them from your sight.

When you feel alone,

I'll hug you with a thousand arms.

If someone steals your heart

and you blush with them under me

I'll keep you both safe.

I'll cover your innocence from peeping eyes.

I don't judge you.

I offer the unconditional love you don't get from family or friends.

I shield you from the darkness of the world.

I cradle your dreams and let them take flight.

I don't care if you cover me in stains,

I don't care if you give me holes or tears,

I don't care if you forget to wash me.

I am a true friend,

here through thick and thin,

wishing only the best for you.

When I get old

you can throw me away,

if you want

I don't want to be around if I make you uncomfortable

If my stains attract too many stares,

I'll understand if you toss me to the side.

If I've grown too ragged to keep you warm,

then the trash can is my rightful place.

I've served my purpose.

I only ask one thing;

don't forget our memories

draw strength from me,

and when you go to the store,

pick out the best blanket you can find

because comfort

is priceless.
