My grandmother sits on the front porch, rocking slowly,
her eyes flickering up to the ceiling,
~a dusty haint blue.
Her hands are knotted yet smooth,
her fingers twist around her cigarette,
She inhales, closes her eyes, and hums
Hey sugar ~ her voice is low and soft,
Will you go ahead and pick that up for me?
I look around, pick what up?
She smiles and gestures broadly into the house,
Just as the phone begins to ring,
A loud, almost comical clanging.
I rush to answer and when I return I look into her eyes,
warm and wrinkled and ask ask as I always do
How did you know it was going to ring?
A joyous laugh erupts from her, a caroling of bells
Soon, sugar, soon
You’ll know all sorts of things too.
