I never used to believe that prayer worked

When oftentimes, the silence of God felt terrifyingly loud

I would sob into a messy wail that would fixate on walls being holy, closing in on me like a Holy Ghost that tormented my twisted body that felt things wrong

I never used to believe in prayer

When pangs of thunder were thrown at my feet

Electrifying my heart into submission as a dark Orpheus tempted into Hades, dipping toes into fire-lakes that would fizzle into deep, dark mist

My soul lost, prayer never met me into the sheaths of light that others promised

Until, I let open the festering window of wounds open like the solace of Seraphim’s gate

So wide, so far

I never used to believe in prayer until

Someone told me they’d prayer for me tonight

Answering a elegy I fought long ago

The frail mortality of forgiveness

Forever and endings

I latched onto that feeling

Prayer.
