Compass points and fleas,

summer’s days and midsummer night’s dreams,

sharp curves and soft angles,

sunlight on the scales of steelhead,

cast iron,

bourbon praline,

crawfish étouffée,

chicory and beignets

fescue available now,

almandine

woodsmoke and cherry drops,

maple leaves splayed scarlet

against a cloudwhite sky,

the envy of New England,

tentacles of fear wrapped around

a desert storm,

slam books, retracted claws,

once more to the lighthouse,

mermaids singing

(red and brown)

in a chamber

with a view of India,

each to each

dark of heartness

slouching lakes,

a paddlewheel

beating through the night

sunrise

Mardi Gras mornings

a thousand yestermaybes

a festival

jazz and heritage,

a swan song

breeding lilacs

out of the dooryard

and we drown
