Point-Blank Strange

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 3 days ago 1 min read
René Magritte, "The Pleasure Principle (Portrait of Edward James)," 1937

Some will mutter that you are not too bright

Most citizens of imagination

Are odd in public, but in dreams delight

Prone are they to grim self-flagellation

For they recognize that real and ideal

Seldom match, in our ordinary world

Filled are they with a wild, quixotic zeal

For what could be, being in what is hurled

Distracted by the mind’s private glory

They disdain public mediocrity

Or find from it, refuge in story

What joy there is in their obscurity!

Do not mistake the dreamer for a fool

Exceptions reveal defects of the rule

Ekphrastic

Very nice! Imagination is an intelligence too!

On a few occasions, your writing has influenced my dreams. As part of my last dream, there was a galactical-looking sky train that took us through this speaker's pupils (to enter the mind as a tour). At some point, there was some wall art with words. I don't know what else happened or how much this kind of fare costed, but it's probably more than K Days. Does this comment give any rank on the inappropriate or cringe-y scale?... as tacky as a tourist can be. Love and appreciate this poem!

I feel like I've had a mirror held up to me especially that line "Or find from it, refuge in story". Deftly done, D.J..

Dreamers may seem odd to some, but their vision enriches our world. It's an inspiring poem!
