Play the Part

Everyone wants to be heard, be the listener so people want you

Chin up. Smile.

Crinkle your eyes

ever so slightly.

C’mon now,

make it believable.

Give them a few chuckles,

a shake of your head,

seem engaged in the conversation.

That’s what they want

right?

Throw in a coy response

or a few, for extra measure.

Don’t let yourself be caught

it is all you’re good for after all.

Focus.

Ignore it.

The dull pain in your gut

It’s not real, you can’t falter.

No blade twisting your insides,

no suspense at when it’ll be pulled,

when you can finally bleed out…

scream, cry, or any response really.

Can’t let the phantom take you

even if his outstretched hand

feels like salvation and whispers home.

Snap out of it.

Play the part like

the good doll you are.

Discard “feelings”.

Who wants ‘em anyway,

there are only bad ones

Right?

So smile.

People are watching after all.

About the Creator

A. Nguyen

A writer at heart who wants to share my works. I want to evoke emotion in people when they read my writing but I won't ever know if I can, if I don't put anything out into the world so this is my first step :)
