Forewarn the children who play near the pit,
Hear how they sing and laugh,
They may stay as long as take care to remember,
Certain death awaits down in the shaft.
But see the boy who is falling in the pit,
Hear how he screams in fear,
Forgotten warnings he regrets not heeding,
His face is a canvas of tears.
The boy wants the others to follow his lead
And join him, he promises it’s harmless,
“Do not be persuaded by the scent or the drop,
It’s more fun down here in the darkness.”
It’s easy to tell them to jump,
When you’re trapped at the bottom of the divide
So easy to tell them “come down”
When you’re already stuck inside.
Pity the boy who has fallen in the pit,
Hear how he howls and moans,
He’ll lure the children down to their deaths
If only to not be alone.
