After the parade

I struggle for answers

As familiar patterns emerge

To find the right reasons

In an ever-changing world

I see a primal purpose

Of acceptance larger than intent

Beyond the present moment

All worthy of respect

After the parade

I am a paradox of courage

On the strings of my guitar

A prelude on piano

Of dreams from afar

I am a lantern on black canvas

Red and gold in equal parts

Love that's unconditional

Brings peace within my heart

After the parade

I dream a dream of equality

Faithful to my beliefs

A promise of my legacy

A purpose to not deceive

So I stand here quietly humbled

Remembering everything twice

A prayer and carefully listening

In awe of the tenacity of life.
