Persephone’s Ascent
Petrarchan sonnet

Everyone awaits the goddess of the flowers,
spring fever throbbing through mortal bodies, greed
for love, ravenous desire to collapse in spilled seed
driving every earthly choice, passion building, becoming a tower,
an inferno filled with fiery power,
restless as a cat, treed
on a burning metal roof, trapped indeed,
a situation quite dour.
Feeling the fire rising from below,
woozy from intoxicating brew,
another round of this game we play:
but it’s my turn to ebb, yours to flow,
wild and caged as animals in a zoo,
unwilling to leave, unable to stay.
