They simmered together with sautéed garlic and onion, filling the room with an aroma so rich it made Damien’s mouth water. “There’s one more thing,” Lucille said, reaching for a small jar in the spice cabinet. “What’s that?” Damien asked, peering over her shoulder. “Nutmeg,” she said with a sly smile.

“Nutmeg?” He blinked. “In marinara?” “Just a pinch,” she said, sprinkling it into the pot. “It’s the secret ingredient. Cuts the acidity and brings out the sweetness.” Damien stared at her, incredulous. “I’ve been driving myself crazy trying to figure this out, and it was nutmeg all along?”

Lucille shrugged. “Sometimes the simplest things make the biggest difference.” When the sauce was finally done, they ladled it over fresh spaghetti and sat down at the table. Damien took his first bite, and his eyes widened.
