The air was cool and damp, and the shelves were lined with jars of preserved vegetables, jams, and sauces, each labeled in Lucille’s neat handwriting. He found the tomatoes easily—thick, vibrant, and impossibly red, like they’d been plucked from a garden yesterday.
As he carried them upstairs, he realized: maybe this was part of the secret. The kitchen was a flurry of activity as they worked side by side. Lucille didn’t bother with measurements, throwing in pinches of salt, a dash of red pepper flakes, and a swirl of olive oil that shimmered like gold.
Damien followed her lead, taking mental notes but realizing there was an art to her method that couldn’t be captured on paper. The canned tomatoes were the star. Lucille crushed them by hand, their juices spilling into the pot.
