Perfect Blue

Your future self is watching

By Melissa IngoldsbyPublished 5 years ago • Updated 5 years ago • 1 min read

she always tries to watch the sky

She wanders

it is hard to breathe

She can’t be herself

She can’t believe

Her reflection

On glass,

On a slanted mirror

It’s all a doorway to her, to

A monster, a future

Who is asking for more.

She wants to be taken seriously

A woman of the arts

Of heavy drama

Of heavy weights

She knows she has the smarts.

She had to wear flouncy dresses, bows in her hair,

And make up that was too bright,

But mainly

It is that weary, tired grin

That has wound her up way

Too tight.

She was her fan’s perfect vision, a beautiful, living piece of art,

She sang and danced till she went a bit loopy—-(don’t stop dancin’!)

broke the trance,

The day the two sided mirror broke apart.

She fell apart in deep, pained reds

In tears that were lost in gold,

She knew she had to put on the magic dancer’s shoes,

Dancing endlessly like the Dying Swan,

To die a death that felt like a dream

And wake up,

As her perfect new copycat
