Peerless Persephone

A Springtime Sonnet

Daughter of Demeter and Hades’ bride

To a winter wearied world, you bring spring

By snow and ice have our spirits been tried;

We greet your sunny return, rejoicing!

The Underworld cannot hold your beauty

Nor keep forever the treasure you are

Thawing winter is your sacred duty

No indignity can your glory mar

Abducted and violated were you

By the saturnine sovereign of shadows;

A lesser being would ignore her cue

And nurse with resentment her many blows

Taken, you give with blooming abundance

Glad and green is your restorative dance!
