"Squirrel lad, why so sad?" 'Pearl The Squirrel' asked her squirrel neighbor Glum with concern as she began to pace.

"No one at school wants to be my friend because in English class when I try to deliver a speech, I get tongue-tied and start to stutter, which causes me to become so stressed out that I pig out on peanut butter, which then causes me to break out with pimples and to excessively mutter," Glum replied with an extra-long face.

"Oh I see... Well, I'll be your friend. You seem really brave and really cool. Every summer I remember seeing you doing diving tricks in Mr. Evans's birdfeed pool."

"I have an idea. Why don't you try a slice of my homemade pecan pie, new friend? It will cure your sadness and bring your heart gladness," Pearl replied politely as she fished in her purse for her Tupperware tin.

"This is the best pie that I have ever tasted," Glum said after he took several bites.

"You should apply for a summer baking position at my Uncle Clyde's bakery over on the right."

"Uncle needs someone to help bake 700 pecan pies for Tim Carmichael's birthday bash on July 8th at ten, and I hear that Mr. Tim was just crowned our town's "Poet of the Decade" this morning and was ecstatic to win and that he just moved from Hollywood, CA, into the ritzy Appalachian mansion on Poets Lane just around the bend."

"Uncle pays $1,000 per hour. But he is not a morning person; please go see him tomorrow afternoon at 3pm when he is less sour. I can call him and let him know that you will be stopping by. I will also let him know that your homemade pie, that you let me try is super-delicious and oh-so-fly!"

"So, Pearl, what do you say? I guarantee you that your final paycheck will cause you to sport a huge grin for days."

"That sounds like a whole lotta fun, Glum. It would be my dream to help bake pies for Mr. Timmy C's birthday bash while making some extra summer cash," Pearl replied enthusiastically.

"I actually know Mr. Timmy C. from way back. He is so kind that he even once saved me from a hawk attack. And his poetry books are always lit; in my family they were always a huge hit. Plus, his poems always make me feel giddy and blessed, like blueberry ice cream always does to my soul when I am stressed," Pearl added with a giggle.

"That's really cool," Glum said as he finished his pie treat, and then he put on his sunnies to shade his eyes from the summer heat.

"How do you feel now that you've finished your pie?" Pearl asked Glum with a hopeful look in her eye.

"I am no longer sad, and I feel better by a mile. I even feel like tap dancing and laughing uncontrollably for a while," Glum replied.

"Well, it looks like you'll have to change your name from "Glum" to "Laughy" now," Pearl quipped with a gigantic smile.
