Peace from the Pain

A long road travelled

He foolishly bit the hand that raised him,

A mistake that had epic consequences for all,

Destruction followed in his path as he stuck by his decisions,

Never heeding the cries of pain from the one he destroyed, while playing hardball.

**

His words ring false as they whisper through the air,

Are they lies for her benefit or his?

Because his actions scream where his words don’t filter,

To her ears that is!

**

He will be ruled with regret for many a year,

Once he truly understands the devastation of his choice,

He’s lost so much more than he could ever gain,

Loyalty, love, family — in which he once rejoice.

**

Does he lay awake at night wondering?

Because she does as she cruelly pines,

Analysing the why; she just cannot understand,

Although she has taken note of all the signs.

**

Heart shattered, she soldiers on,

Calling to the future to calm her pain,

Forgiveness is no longer hers to give,

As he foolishly threw that back at her again.

**

Can he still smile through the barren landscape?

She couldn’t for awhile but she’s finding her smile once more,

Guarded with her heart, his lesson has been received,

And she’s locked it tight, turning the key in the door.

**

At night when the darkness is at its fullest,

When the moon has disappeared from view,

She’s done her grieving, made her peace,

Knowing she’s received far more than her due.

**

Strangely, her life has calmed greatly with this loss,

Because previously she was often sucked emotionally dry,

With little left for the others she loved,

And plenty of time to hide and cry.

**

Now she has more to give to those more deserving,

And life is a little easier to bear,

She’s surrounded by those that are true to her heart,

Those that genuinely love her with their care.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
