Part of the Pile

A poem

She only stopped hitting

when it made her hands hurt.

Burying the joy,

a body piled in the dirt.

-

All those windows watched and

heard the vitriol as it was spilt

bruised knees from praying,

there was nothing God forbid.

-

Committed to the bit,

refresh the forums for new pings

on a loop, every fifteen minutes.

Red circle by the bell,

transactional fees disappearing

into the ether.

-

Failed to paint the picture clearly,

words smothered in a poison

stuck in the same flat circle, still,

pretending that I make the choices.

-

Influenced by a thousand different

voices blasting through,

all at a volume

too high to be palatable.

-

I still wait for your response

but it’s lost in the noise, untethered and intangible.

-

My head loud with the past,

I still haven’t forgotten the last-

all of that shattered glass,

the shadows did nothing but dance.

-

We hid for what felt like hours while they scanned the surroundings,

their wide technological eyes latched onto us like magnets.

cowering in the light, the wingless demon chased us home

searching through the plethora of pain

-

a fine-toothed comb.
