A Poem

There are two shoes to choose,

On this blue afternoon,

From the side of a heavy bed,

Alluring calling,

You to rest your cloudy mind,

And make no choice at all,

And instead accept the mood,

Of this dreary Friday.

Leather boots,

Cracked and worn,

But still supple,

Ebony and fresh,

Tucked and nesting in a box,

Needing a lick of polish,

But still ready to travel,

Flexing its skin.

Cotton slippers,

Easy and laid,

Slapped upon the floor,

With rubber soles,

Cheaply made and wearing already,

Beckoning to stay;

The grey weather knocks,

Wanting to come in.

Which pair is best,

If any at all;

To wander free?

To recover in peace?

A choice must be made,

By two bare feet,

Cold and alone,

Tapping upon the hardwood floor.
