Painted Thoughts

by Katherine Summers

With whispering silences, I think

And within those thoughts are dreams

Dreams built with youth’s bright faith and recklessness

They are rainbow-coloured wishes piercing the darkest corners

With happy, yellow sunbeams

Bursting forth into a fragrant world

Filled with fountains of future joys.

Or my mind is peaceful, lulled by nature’s beauty

Now, thoughts painted with artistic care

In pastel shades of reverie

Sprinkled Lo with silver-fairy dust!

But thoughts need darken

And down they fly

Haunted in green and melancholy mood

Anxiety, fear, pain, hurt, withall

Riding rampant on crested-waves of ruby-blue

Flaming like fire through crimson channels

Of bloody heart and mystery,

Down, down and down they go!

Into a steely hell of despair.

But HOPE gallant on the whitest steed

Drives back the blackest hour

And with her loving brush, arcs light

From the brilliant, brilliant palette that is dawn.

Night is past

But the illusion lost.
