One can't live without it in their lives, but why
It's never a pleasant thing to experience
It's one of the things that brings us to cry
Or leaves us feeling furious
Maddening it is to have to suffer the feelings of pain
Suffering such things as loss and suffering again and again
It drives us to feel like we're going insane
And beliefs that we can't do anything to win
Without it, we would not know better things
For everything would always seem the same
From the moment that friendly call comes, when the phone rings
To that sensation when you get lucky and win the game
Our lives were meant to deal with pain and sorrow
Without it all we would not know
The joys that come from a better tomorrow
Without pain, we'd not know what directions not to go
Our hearts would be empty and soulless things inside of us
Only beating to keep us going
There would be no joys or experiences that give us that rush
We'd simply go through life, good things around us, but never knowing
Pain drives us to want to do better the next time around
It tells us what works and what we're doomed to fail
It gives us a story that's worthy of being found
A life that makes a more relatable tale
It tells us that we loved and what mattered to us most
Without pain, things come to an end, but we know not what it means
It brings us visits from yesterday's ghost
And allows us to smile when traveling through time's special scenes
Pain comes, and pain goes by
How we carry it with us is what matters in the end
We can let it beat us to our knees and make us sigh
Or show it that we will never bend
But most of all, it is a building block
It builds us into our true selves when done
A journey that takes all the time seen on the clock
One that if we're lucky, we may one day look back and know we had fun
Ahhh, pain
