Owlie's Long Nights

Shadows creep all around,

Owlie turns in circles to see.

Afraid, he hoots at every sound

while perched up high in his tree.

Though he’s exhausted every night,

scary things won’t let him sleep.

He dozes when the moon is full and bright,

but mostly stays awake counting sheep.

Each rustling leaf and snapping twig

makes Owlie’s big eyes grow wide.

The dark feels strange and much too big,

making frightened Owlie want to hide.

He hugs his wings snug and tight

and watches stars drift slowly by,

waiting bravely for morning light

to paint sunshine through the sky.

Then at last his worried mind can rest.

He settles down and sinks so deep.

Daytime naps are simply the best,

and sweet little Owlie falls asleep.
