I started to disappear
when I was still
such a little girl.
Excitement
Outrage
Indignation
As the world unfurled to reveal its brokenness
Only to be told to turn away
To be silent
Don't agitate
Deviate
Obliterate
The comfort of our status quo
The pages, the ink, between the bounds of the hard cover to lock them in
Better yet put a lock on that journal
Keep it to yourself
Don't say it out loud
Swallow it down
But the words, the thoughts the ideas
The reality
So many letters swallowed
They piled up
Crystallized
Became like shards
Destroying the insides
But then cutting their way out
Too long
Too many
Too much
They well up inside
They start to leak
In rivers
Down my cheeks
Rivers
Of rage
Of powerlessness
Gathering in pools
The level rising
Threatening to overflow
To drown me
So now
Nowhere for the words to go
For the river
Of rage
To flow
Except out.
Pulled the plug on
The silence
I'm still mad
But it isn't choking the life
Out of my soul
I no longer
Embrace
Silence
It needs to be said
Calling bullshit
On all of it
Breathe
Relief
Voicing the anger
Set me free
